DOL ranks farming the most dangerous industry in America

The United States Department of Labor (DOL) recently reported that the agricultural industry was the most dangerous industry in the United States last year. Sadly, many farmers in South Dakota are already too familiar with the dangers.

Just last September, a two-year-old boy tragically died after getting caught in a grain auger-conveyor near Chamberlain, South Dakota. A few months before, a Freeman resident died in an accident involving his tractor.

Every day, more than 250 agricultural industry workers sustain a serious injury while working, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. As farmers and their families are well aware, these accidents can happen at any time and it is important to be prepared.

There are several types of accidents and injuries that can occur in the agricultural industry. Some of the most common farming hazards can include:

  • Machinery and equipment accidents
  • Silo and grain bin suffocation
  • Tractor rollovers and collisions
  • Inhalation of dangerous gasses
  • Falls and falling objects
  • Incidents with livestock

Farmers also tend to experience hearing issues from the noise that results from machinery and other equipment. Additionally, because farmers work some of the longest hours in any profession, many can experience extreme fatigue. Tragically, this can lead to farmers falling asleep at the wheel.

Farming accidents can be devastating. The most common injuries tend to include loss of limbs, head injuries, back injuries, disfigurement and even death. If you or a loved one sustains an injury in a farming accident, consult with a trusted personal injury attorney to see if you can receive compensation for your injuries.
